2026 Funding Opportunities
A Note to Our Research Community
We recognize that this is a unique and challenging moment for science and medicine, especially for those of us committed to neuromuscular diseases. We also know that moments like this require candor and clarity about the challenges before us.
As difficult as it is to share, MDA will not open a new application cycle for our Research and Development grant programs in 2026. This pause reflects budget realities we cannot ignore. Like many nonprofit funders, MDA is navigating a tighter landscape for research support. While this means we cannot open a new grant cycle in 2026, it does not change our long-term commitment to the neuromuscular research field.
Importantly, MDA remains firmly committed to advancing science and innovation. In 2026, we will:
- Continue supporting more than $17 million in multi-year research grants awarded in prior cycles, including the new 2025 cohort.
- Maintain our conference grant program, with emphasis on meetings that foster collaboration between scientists and the patient community to drive progress. (Please note these grants support meeting organizers, not individual travel.)
- If funds allow, announce specific requests for applications later in the year.
We know this pause may be disappointing for those eager to submit new proposals. It is disappointing for us too. We are making this difficult decision precisely because we are committed to sustaining research funding for the long term. By continuing to fund our active grants, we are ensuring stability now and strength for the future.
Thank you for your continued partnership and your dedication to our shared mission.

MDA Conference Grants (CG)
MDA supports meetings and conferences focused on the muscular dystrophies and related diseases of the neuromuscular system. These are the muscular dystrophies (including Duchenne and Becker); motor neuron diseases (including ALS and SMA); the peripheral nerve disorders (CMT and Friedreich's ataxia); inflammatory myopathies; disorders of the neuromuscular junction; metabolic diseases of muscle as well as other myopathies. Conference grants are awarded to encourage scientific meetings for researchers and/or clinicians to exchange ideas and to establish collaborations. Meetings focused on therapy development will be considered a priority. Conference grants are awarded to applicants who are organizing meetings and not to individuals wishing to travel to conferences.
