Drink One for Dane: Dutch Bros and Customers Team Up With Muscular Dystrophy Association to Accelerate Research for Treatments and Cures for ALS

On Friday, May 10, Dutch Bros Coffee will mark its 13th annual Drink One for Dane day by donating proceeds from each drink sold at all locations in seven states to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), the leading non-profit in ALS research and services.

Each year, Dutch Bros Coffee honors the memory of its co-founder by donating proceeds from its Drink One for Dane campaign to the MDA to #EndALS
Dane Boersma founded Dutch Bros with his brother, Travis, in 1992. Dane passed away from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in 2009. Dutch Bros and the Boersma family started Drink One for Dane as a way to bring awareness to, and support research to find treatments and cures for, the disease.

“Our customers make a massive difference every time they buy a drink and support Drink One for Dane,” said Brant Boersma, Dane’s son and chief culture officer of Dutch Bros. “This fundraiser is, obviously, close to my heart. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be able to look our customers in the eye and thank them personally.”

Over the last 12 years, Dutch Bros customers have helped the company raise more than $4.8 million for MDA. This year, Dutch Bros is hoping to add $1.5 million to that total. For the first time ever, in addition to raising money at the stand, customers will have the ability to donate directly to the campaign through Dutch Bros’ website https://www.dutchbros.com

“Dane made a huge impact on everyone who was lucky enough to know him. I’m honored our company and customers are continuing his legacy, and I’m humbled by the response we see each year,” said Travis Boersma, CEO and co-founder of Dutch Bros.

Much of the money raised since 2007 has gone to support MDA’s ALS-designated multidisciplinary care centers for patients, as well as to fund research for a cure.

“It is because of inspirational partners like Dutch Bros creating community programs such as Drink One for Dane that we are able to fund innovations in science and care for people living with ALS. This critical funding supports vital research for better treatments and will ultimately unlock the cure,” says MDA President and CEO Lynn O’Connor Vos. “We are thankful to the Dutch Bros family for continuing to support our mission and raise awareness for ALS on behalf of Dane.”

Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is committed to transforming the lives of people affected by muscular dystrophy, ALS and related neuromuscular diseases. We do this through innovations in science and innovations in care. As the largest source of funding for neuromuscular disease research outside of the federal government, MDA has committed more than $1 billion since our inception to accelerate the discovery of therapies and cures. Research we have supported is directly linked to life-changing therapies across multiple neuromuscular diseases. MDA’s MOVR is the first and only data hub that aggregates clinical, genetic and patient reported data for multiple neuromuscular diseases to improve health outcomes and accelerate drug development. MDA supports the largest network of multidisciplinary clinics providing best in class care at more than 150 of the nation’s top medical institutions. Our Resource Center serves the community with one-on-one specialized support, and we offer educational conferences, events, and materials for families and healthcare providers. Each year thousands of children and young adults learn vital life skills and gain independence at summer camp and through recreational programs, at no cost to families.
