Albuquerque - University of New Mexico

David G. Bear, Ph.D.
(RG) The PABP2 protein and oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD)
$ 34,925.00	7/1/99 - 6/30/00	Year 1
$ 34,811.00	7/1/00 - 6/30/01	Year 2
$ 34,950.00	7/1/01 - 6/30/02	Year 3
Summary: OPMD is an inherited disease that strikes older adults and is caused by a mutation in a gene encoding the PABP2 protein. Researchers will study the cellular biochemistry of the mutant PABP2 protein to determine its pathogenic mechanism.
Richard Cripps, D.Phil
(RG) Genetic analysis of muscle remodeling in Drosophila melanogaster
$ 45,714.00	1/1/00 - 12/31/00	Year 2
$ 47,913.00	1/1/01 - 12/31/01	Year 3
Summary: Researchers will study how muscles in the larval stage of flies are broken down and then rebuilt in the form for use in the adult. This will help us understand how human muscles can be remodeled after injury/disease.
