Indianapolis - Indiana University

William Groh, M.D.
(RG) Determination of arrhythmia risk in myotonic dystrophy (MMD)
$ 30,349.00	1/1/00 - 12/31/00	Year 1
Summary: Heart rhythm abnormalities are common and life-threatening in MMD. This study's goal is to determine if researchers can predict who is at risk and thus open the door for treatment.
Weinian Shou, Ph.D.
(RG) The role of FK506-binding protein in skeletal muscle function
$ 64,985.00	7/1/99 - 6/30/00	Year 1
$ 60,000.00	7/1/00 - 6/30/01	Year 2
$ 60,000.00	7/1/01 - 6/30/02	Year 3
Summary: FKBP12 interacts and modulates ryanodine receptors (RyR). RyR controls calcium release from sarcoplasmic reticulum in muscle excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling. This research will demonstrate the function of FKBP12 in skeletal muscle function and possible association with muscular diseases such as central core disease and/or malignant hyperthermia.

West Lafayette - Purdue University

Kevin Hannon, Ph.D.
(RG) Extracellular regulation of Duchenne dystrophy muscle degeneration
$ 75,000.00	1/1/00 - 12/31/00	Year 1
$ 75,000.00	1/1/01 - 12/31/01	Year 2
Summary: The ability of a family of growth factors, which are elevated in muscle during muscular dystrophy, to cause or potentially inhibit muscle degeneration will be tested.
Stephen Konieczny, Ph.D.
(RG) Regulation of MRF4 gene expression
$ 55,000.00	7/1/99 - 6/30/00	Year 3
Summary: This study will identify the regulatory elements that control expression of the MRF4 gene in developing and in adult regenerating skeletal muscle.
