The girl at a glance
The only child of Joel and Wendi Umali of Redlands, Calif., Abbey has nearly finished her second term as MDA National Goodwill Ambassador and recently agreed to represent the Association for a third year in 2010. She and her parents travel the country attending MDA fundraisers, sponsor gatherings and other events to spread the word about MDA and its mission.
Abbey has congenital hypomyelinating neuropathy, a form of CMT characterized by lack of coordination and balance, along with muscle weakness. She walks with the aid of leg braces.
Active and outgoing, Abbey loves to dance, swim, ride her bike, play the piano, act in plays, read, and visit the library and bookstores. She also likes to play games, especially cards and Rubik's Cube. Her favorite activities include traveling and cuddling with her family. A fifth-grader, she's especially fond of reading, math, geography and recess.
Oh, and by the way — she can sing!
The Fan Favorite winner will be announced Nov. 19.
Additionally, on Dec. 7, Gap will announce the 20 finalists for this year's Gap Casting Call, five in each of four categories: baby boys, baby girls, boys ages 5-10 and girls ages 5-10. America will vote to decide the four contest winners (one from each category). The new "faces" of Gap will be featured in Gap store windows nationwide in February 2010.
