Summer Camp
MDA IS HERE TO HELP
Since 1955, MDA has provided youngsters with neuromuscular diseases unforgettable fun and recreation at MDA summer camp. Each year MDA supports over 80 week-long summer camps across the country.
Campers say the week they spend at MDA camp is "the best time of our lives." MDA summer camps offer a wide range of programs for young people ages 6 to 17. Activities and equipment are geared to the abilities of campers and may include outdoor sports such as fishing, baseball, swimming, horseback riding and boating. Less physically demanding activities include arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs and entertainment.
MDA camp programs, although structured, are conducted in a relaxed atmosphere that gives campers an unmatched opportunity to develop lifelong friendships, share interests and build self-confidence. Skills are developed and taught for year-round use, and a child with a disability can just be a child among friends. One camper says, "I like the independence that camp gives me, and I love being with my camp friends."
Trained volunteer counselors assist campers one-on-one with their personal care needs around the clock. Other volunteers include medical staff, instructors, activity coordinators and local sponsors.
Summer camp gives youngsters a chance to practice independence and to be assisted by people outside the family. For parents, it's a week free of the daily responsibilities of caregiving. Many parents use this week to go on vacation or focus on activities with their other children.
There's no charge to campers' families. Call the health care service coordinator at your local MDA office for information about MDA summer camp in your area. |
