MDA's Search for a Treatment or Cure

MDA's SEARCH FOR A TREATMENT OR CURE

MDA's efforts to help people with myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome are unparalleled by any other voluntary health organization. The Association is the world's leading nongovernmental sponsor of research into these disorders, both in terms of number of projects and amount of expenditures.

Under the auspices of MDA's Medical Advisory Committee, research is supported into potential therapies that might slow, stop or reverse the progression of diseases of the neuromuscular junction. In addition, MDA monitors myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome drug trials throughout the world, and serves as an international clearinghouse for information on MG, LEMS and 38 other neuromuscular diseases.

Treatment strategies currently being investigated include designing genes that specifically target self-reactive immune cells; altering immune system responses to promote tolerance to the acetylcholine receptor; and refining the protocol for use of IVIg.
