2004 Telethon High Spots

The 2004 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon created a collection of heartfelt memories. Besides raising nearly $59.4 million for MDA’s research and services programs, it paid special tribute to the late Mattie J.T. Stepanek and to the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Charo
Jann Carl & Jeni Stepanek
Perennial performer Charo gave an awesome display of classical guitar virtuosity. Jann Carl and Jeni Stepanek shared a light moment during Jeni’s heartfelt tribute to her son, Mattie, who died just before turning 14 this summer. Mattie, MDA’s National Goodwill Ambassador since 2002, had mitochondrial myopathy, which also affects his mother.
The Telethon was dedicated to Mattie, pictured here with service dog Micah. They seem to be sharing in the celebration of the $59.4 million total in pledges and contributions.
Representatives of the International Association of Fire Fighters proudly presented MDA with $20.3 million, a record amount raised during the union’s 50th year of MDA sponsorship.
Soprano extraordinaire Maureen McGovern wowed the audience with several songs.
Jerry Lewis
Star Jerry Lewis clowned, sang and pleaded for public support for "his kids."
MDA National Youth Chairman and teen singing star Billy Gilman gave an unforgettable performance.
Anchor Ed McMahon and co-hosts Cynthia Garrett, Jann Carl and Larry King helped keep things moving throughout the show’s 21½ hours.
