Nona Maxwells Amazing Canes

Who:

Nona Leatherwood Maxwell, 50

Where:

Yukon, Okla.

DX:

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, 20-plus years

What:

Makes hardwood canes and walking sticks,
featuring Native American designs. Sells
them to people who need walking assistance
and to collectors, for $150 to $450 each.
Maureen McGovern

How:

Started with her wish for a more attractive cane to use. Drawing on her Native American heritage, shes made about 150 hand-carving the wood and decorating with Crow beads, buckskin, turquoise, coral stone, imitation feathers, brass beads and cane fiber.

Nona says:

The first and most important thing I do with my canes is pray over them before I begin working. I pray they will find their way to the person who needs them and that my canes will be as good medicine for them as theyve been for me.
