AMERICAN EXPRESS SIGNS ON AS A NATIONAL SPONSOR OF
MDA TELETHON FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT YEAR
TUCSON, Ariz., Aug. 30, 2002 - For the fifth consecutive year, American Express will raise awareness and money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association as a national sponsor of the 2002 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon.
Every time the American Express Card is used to make a Telethon contribution to support MDA in its battle against neuromuscular diseases, American Express will make a $10 donation to MDA, up to a maximum of $160,000. (The $10 donation from American Express isn't tax deductible for Cardmembers.)
In addition, American Express will donate an additional $40,000 during matching pledge segments of the Telethon broadcasts in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Houston.
The company is also encouraging its Membership Rewards enrollees to donate their Membership Rewards points to MDA. American Express will turn the donated points into contributions to benefit "Jerry's kids."
"Our continued involvement with the Muscular Dystrophy Association is one way American Express fulfills its core value of being a good corporate citizen," said Elizabeth Langwith, vice president, strategy development, American Express. "By extending the effectiveness of our Cardmembers' generous donations to MDA, and by making it easier for them to contribute with their Membership Rewards points, we're proudly supporting MDA's lifesaving research and services programs."
Cardmembers who want to donate Membership Rewards points to MDA can learn how to do so by calling (800) AXP-EARN or visiting www.americanexpress.com.
The MDA Telethon will be broadcast beginning at 9 p.m. EDT Sept. 1, originating from CBS Television City in Hollywood and carried by nearly 200 "Love Network" stations nationwide. The 21½-hour show — a live extravaganza of spectacular entertainment, combined with information about neuromuscular diseases — can also be seen on MDA's Web site.
Viewers may use their American Express Cards to make secure donations at the MDA Web site or by calling phone numbers provided during the broadcast.
