JERRY LEWIS MDA TELETHON PRESENTS LIVE ENTERTAINMENT VARIETY
HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 26, 2002 — In an American cultural tradition, Jerry Lewis will present his 37th Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Sept. 1-2. With the list of scheduled celebrities still growing, Telethon 2002 promises to continue its tradition of headlining the most eclectic variety of TV entertainment.
The Telethon will air for 21½ hours starting at 9 p.m. EDT Sunday. Check local listings for stations and start times. The Telethon raises funds and awareness to support MDA's research and services programs.
Backing up MDA National Chairman and Telethon star Jerry Lewis will be Ed McMahon as Telethon anchor. Also assisting Lewis as Telethon co-hosts will be Wayne Brady, Jann Carl, Norm Crosby, Cynthia Garrett and Bob Zany in Hollywood, while Charo will co-host segments from Las Vegas, and Andy Williams will co-host segments from Branson, Mo.
Musical talent on the national show covers a wide spectrum of styles and genres, and includes gospel singers Yolanda Adams, Shirley Caesar and Take 6; country music favorites Glen Campbell, Tammy Cochran, the Oak Ridge Boys and Jim Stafford; pop stars Aretha Franklin, Patti Austin, Chicago, Patti LaBelle, Little Richard and Nancy Sinatra.
Other musical guests are instrumentalists Sarah Chang, Esteban and Arturo Sandoval; and all-around favorites the Clarks, the Derailers, Clint Holmes, Jack Jones, Maureen McGovern, Steve Lawrence and Three Mo' Tenors.
Special musical guests will include Bradley Walker & the Lonesome River Band. Walker is affected by nemaline myopathy, one of more than 40 neuromuscular diseases in MDA's program.
This year's broadcast boasts the magic of Penn & Teller and the acrobatics of Aerial Adage. From the world of comedy come Max Alexander, Tim Conway & Harvey Korman, Yakov Smirnoff, Sunda Croonquist, Christopher Titus, and comic legends Phyllis Diller and Jonathan Winters.
Also in the line-up are tap dancing star Savion Glover and children's favorite Bear from "Bear in the Big Blue House."
Several personalities will make appeals, asking viewers to make pledges. On the roster are Billy Crystal, Fyvush Finkel, Larry King, Lisa Rinna & Ty Treadway, Ray Romano and popular Latin TV personality Cristina Saralegui.
