THE 2011-2012 FLU VACCINE
The 2011-2012 influenza vaccine will protect against H1N1, as well as the common influenza B virus and an H3N2 virus. It's available in two varieties — intranasal and injectable. The intranasal form (sprayed into the nose) is generally not recommended for those affected by neuromuscular disease.
The FDA has approved a second injectable variety of the vaccine — Fluzone Intradermal — available for people ages 18 to 64. Fluzone Intradermal will not be available at Walgreens pharmacies, Duane Reade pharmacies, or Take Care Clinics, but individuals who choose this option can seek reimbursement, up to $30, from their local MDA office.
You should check with your doctor before obtaining any vaccine, especially if you're affected by myasthenia gravis, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, or taking immune-suppressing medications such as corticosteroids.
If your current health coverage doesn't include seasonal flu vaccines as a preventative health benefit, MDA's Flu Shot Program can help. Click here to learn more.
