The new movie “Extraordinary Measures,” starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser, tells the story of a father's quest to save the lives of his two children with Pompe disease.
MDA has played a key role in Pompe disease research, providing more than $3.4 million in research grants made possible by people like you. Grants were made to researchers around the world, including John Howell at Murdoch University in Western Australia and Y.T. Chen at Duke University, whose work ultimately led to the creation of the lifesaving drug Myozyme by the biopharmaceutical firm Genzyme.
I encourage you to watch the 60-second video from MDA National Vice President Jann Carl that's playing in movie theaters and malls across the nation, to learn more about MDA's role in Pompe disease research.
Thanks to help like yours, hope has never been more real for the more than 1 million Americans affected by neuromuscular diseases.
As MDA's research program heads into 2010, expect to hear about a number of clinical trials of experimental treatments for several other diseases in MDA's program. You'll also be hearing about MDA's new patient registry that will aid in the launch of even more clinical trials.
Thank you for your support of MDA's research program. As is clear in “Extraordinary Measures,” working together we can make an extraordinary difference!
With every best wish,

Gerald C. Weinberg President & CEO
