Durable medical equipment (DME), such as wheelchairs, walkers, portable oxygen devices and hospital beds, can be very expensive — and the process for obtaining them from Medicare can be very confusing.

Scholarships Offered to Students with a Parent with ALS

The Merfeld Family Foundation Scholarship Fund — a national scholarship to help children of parents with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) pay for their college education — is now accepting applications for the fall 2012 term.

The deadline to apply for one of four $2,500 scholarships is Jan. 6.

The scholarship fund was established by Greg Merfeld, who received an ALS diagnosis in 2010 at age 49. Merfeld has lost more than 20 relatives to the disease, which runs in his family.

Ten-year-old Quinn Schnitzlein has been using a power chair since he was 3, so he’s a pretty good driver. But the boy from Marietta, Ga., who has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), often bumped into things when he backed up.

One day last year, Quinn and some friends were at a fast-food restaurant. “We were at different tables,” Quinn says, “and when I’d try to turn around to talk to them, I kept hitting things.”

MLB Honors ALS Activist

The law professor and ALS activist responsible for getting Major League Baseball fired up to defeat ALS died Nov. 1. In tribute, Game 5 of the World Series, played on Nov. 2 between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies, was dedicated to Michael Goldsmith, 58, a devoted baseball fan who pushed the game he loved to fight the disease he hated.

A Webcast is now available of the fourth annual research symposium held as part of the ALS TDI Leadership Summit 2009 on Oct. 5. The symposium was conducted at the MDA-supported ALS Therapy Development Institute in Cambridge, Mass.
